Task One: Reflective account
- Compare your personal values and principle with the principles of support for working in health and social care.
As a care professional I understand the importance of my personal contribution in improving the quality of care given to patients. This means that I need a good understanding of the constitution of good care. I should then consider whether my personal principles and values include all the factors and whether I demonstrate the personal values in action. I believe in the following principles and values: care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment.
My personal values and principles are directly related to the principles of support for working in health and social care. This is because the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) principles are derived from the above values (Royal College of Nursing, 2015). The first principle is the principle that requires nurses and care professionals to treat patients with dignity; the second principle is the principle that requires nurses to take responsibility for their actions; the third principle requires nurses to manage risks in practice; the fourth principle requires nurses to put patients at the centre of care delivered; the fifth principle requires strong and excellent communication between nurses and patients; the sixth principle requires nurses to be up to date with the current information and use evidence based methods in practice; the seventh principle requires nurses to collaborate with one another to ensure that the quality of care delivered is improved; the eight principle requires nurses to commit to mentor other professionals and lead by example (Watterson, 2013).
I have good communication skills, ethical integrity and employ the best available evidence in making decisions concerning care delivered to patients. However, I need to improve on my transcultural skills and have a better understanding of how different clinical phenomena like pain and anxiety among others are expressed by different people from different cultures. This will further help in improving the quality of care delivered (Watterson, 2013).
- Assess how your personal culture and experience influences your role in supporting users of services and others in health and social care settings.
I have a personal culture of communicating with service users that help me to better understand the different problems that the patients undergo and the importance of wellness to such patients. However, as has been mentioned, I believe I am still not culturally competent and is working towards achieving cultural competency so that I have a full understanding of the practices of the different cultural groups that I will be dealing with. This knowledge will be very helpful in solving some of the challenges that I will be facing in nursing practice (White, Duncan & Baumle, 2010).
In my experience, I have learnt that there is a dynamic process in understanding the cultural identity of patients. This requires time and patience. I have learnt to treat patients individually and not to discriminate against patients based on their culture or any other form of discrimination.
- Discuss how new developments and changes to personal values can impact on health and social care.
According to Pavline (2010), changes in personal values may have an effect in the quality of care delivered to patients. Socialisation is one of the ways in which professional values of a care practitioner may change. Socialisation takes place in three stages. The first stage is the pre-socialisation stage where an individual’s values are influenced by public perceptions of the profession (Stacey et al. 2011). This stage is followed by the socialisation stage where nursing students learn to behave professionally. The socialisation stage is followed by the post-socialisation stage where the professional values are applied in clinical practice (Stacey et al. 2011). However, there are some instances when values may change. For example, if I change my personal values and start showing some form of discrimination to people in lower social classes, then the quality of care that I deliver to such people will reduce. On the other hand, if I change my values to
avoid stigmatisation of HIV/AIDS patients, then I will improve the quality of care that I can deliver to such patients.

From the development plan, I can see that I have achieved the short-term goals. I am working on the medium and long-term goals. The short-term achievements will help me achieve my medium- and long-term goals because they will give me the confidence to understand that I can really achieve the goals.
- Provide an evaluation of the effectiveness of your development plan to your own development as a health and social care practitioner.
This personal development plan will be very important for my personal development. Improvement in decision making and IT skills were included because of the importance of these two in modern clinical practice. It is required that all decisions be evidence-based (Johansson, Fogelberg-Dahm & Wadensten, 2010). This is a culture that I would like to inculcate in my practice. IT skills will help me in making electronic records. This will be integrated with legal competence that will require that I maintain confidentiality of information received from patients (Richards, Prybutok & Ryan, 2012).
Task Three: Working with others
- Explain how the limits of own work role impacts on work with others.
There are instances when the limits of my own work role may impact on work with others. For example, I still do not have a good understanding of the culture of other professions and of other service users. This can be a source of conflict while I will be working with other colleagues. The conflict may reduce the pace at which care is delivered because some time will be needed to solve the conflicts.
- Discuss how to improve personal contributions to the effectiveness of a team.
To effectively work with others in the team, there is need that I develop strategies that will ensure the progression of team habits. Some of the needed strategies include: set my goals and ensure that I achieve them; set priorities and ensure that I effectively manage my time; have my daily functions organised in an effective manner; continuously look for better options of completing tasks assigned to me within the team; working with others collaboratively so that we prevent burnout among ourselves.
In this regard, I will advocate for responsibility among all team members so that there is a team function and identity developed. Responsibility will also ensure that there are shared objectives within the team and that each member of the team has independent roles (Ezziane et al. 2012). This will help in creating respect among team members ensuring that there are few conflicts within the team (Riches & Robson, 2014).
